FULLERTON, Calif. - Second-seeded Oklahoma State (39-13) used a fifth inning home run to defeat No. 3 seed Oregon, 2-1, on the second day of the NCAA Regionals in Fullerton, Calif. The Ducks (33-18 overall, 10-11 Pac-10) are now 1-1 in the double elimination tournament and face San Diego State at 5:20 p.m. today.
Oregon senior Alyssa Laux drove in senior Amber Hutchison in the bottom of the first inning to put Oregon ahead 1-0. The Ducks' defense came up huge in the top of the sixth inning after Oklahoma loaded the bases on a double by Brooke Siebel, an Oregon error and a walk with one out. Sophomore second baseman caught Alliya Anderson's line drive and quickly through to first for the double play to end the inning.
But Oklahoma State came back in the third inning, tying the game on an RBI single up the middle by left fielder Megan Carey that scored Jade Lindly, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
The Cowgirls then took the lead, 2-1, after a home run by shortstop Stephanie Nicholoson in the top of the fifth inning. Oregon was unable to score in the final three innings and finished the game with six hits. Senior Lynsey Haij was 2-for-3 as was Laux.
Oregon freshman pitcher Amy Harris (15-13) had five strikeouts in the loss while Oklahoma State pitcher Lauren Bay struck out 10 to improve to 26-8 on the season.
