No. 6 Seeded Softball Slams No. 19 Ranked South Florida, 8-0, In NCAA Regional Tournament

May 16, 2003

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Senior Clare Burnum went 3-for-3 with a home run and triple, helping No. 6 seeded Oregon State upset No. 19 ranked University of South Florida, 8-0, in five innings on Friday night at the NCAA Softball Regional Tournament in Gainesville, FL.

The Beavers (34-30) dominated the contest, pounding nine hits against South Florida (54-19), and setting up a 9 a.m. PDT game on Saturday against No. 5 seeded Florida Atlantic - OSU's fourth opponent from the Sunshine State in three days.

Things started similar to the Florida State game for the Beavers. Junior hurler Monica Hoffman fanned the first batter she faced and the Beavers got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the opening inning.

Burnum blasted her 10th home run of the year when she sent the second pitch from Leigh Ann Ellis (34-11) well out of the park down the right field line. Burnum's blast put the Beavers in front 1-0.

OSU worked its way out of a major jam in the second inning after South Florida loaded the bases with one-out but failed to score when Hoffman fanned pinch hitter Rena Rodriguez and forced leadoff batter Kattrina Dowd to pop-up. The Beavers were given no assistance from the home plate umpire who decided that pitches on the corners were not strikes.

USF loaded the bases again in the third inning but once again failed to score.

Back-to-back singles by Cara Maxey and Burnum and a smart base running play by Adrienne Alo helped the Beavers extend their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Shelly Prochaska's RBI groundout to second with the bases loaded plated Maxey and Burnum came around to score when Alo intentionally stayed alive in a run-down.

OSU freshman pitcher Amy Klever entered the contest in relief in the top of the fourth and retired three in a row after allowing back-to-back singles.

Oregon State put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, blasting five hits en route to scoring five runs with two outs in the frame. Kelly Petersen started things off by reaching base with a single and then Lisa Allen singled to get aboard. Pinch hitter Shannon Sorg roped an RBI shot through the right side that plated Petersen and Burnum followed with her third hit of the contest, belting a two-run triple to the fence in right-center. Senior Brynnen Guthrie stepped to the plate and capped off the onslaught with a two-run home run over the left field fence.

Klever retired three straight in the top of the fifth, including a pair of strikeouts, to close out the contest. Hoffman earned the victory with three innings of work to improve to 24-14 on the season.

Burnum finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, with three RBI, and three runs scored. She raised her career total of runs scored to 102 - one shy of the OSU all-time mark.

Petersen went 2-for-2 and recorded her 10th stolen base of the year.

Oregon State improved to 13-1 on the season when hitting at least two home runs in a game.
