Home Runs Lift Softball Past Texas-Arlington, 2-0, And Into NCAA Regional Championship Game
May 17, 2003
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Home runs from freshman Adrienne Alo and senior Steph Adams lifted Oregon State's softball team to a 2-0 victory against Texas-Arlington in Saturday's NCAA Regional Tournament semi-final game in Gainesville, FL.
The Beavers (36-30) advance to Sunday's 10 a.m. PDT championship game against No. 4 ranked University of Oklahoma (42-12). Oregon State must win a pair of games against the Sooners to qualify for the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, OK.
The game was a pitcher's dual from the start with neither team able to get on the scoreboard.
Texas-Arlington looked to break the game open in the bottom of the third inning after tallying back-to-back hits and putting runners on second and third with one out. Alo got the Beavers out of a jam on the defensive end by catching a fly ball in left field and then gunning down a Maverick runner at the plate who was attempting to score.
Alo's one-out shot over the wall in center field broke the scoreless tie and gave the Beavers the momentum. Beaver hurler Monica Hoffman (26-14) struck out two of the three batters she faced in the bottom of the sixth and Adams gave OSU an extra cushion when she led-off the seventh inning with her second blast of the day over the wall in straightaway center.
Hoffman recorded her seventh strikeout of the contest in the seventh inning and forced a pair of groundouts to end the game and keep Oregon State's title hopes alive.
Hoffman's victory was her 26th of the season - just two wins shy of the OSU all-time single season record. The junior hurler has a 4-0 record in tournament action, boasting a near perfect 0.24 ERA and 27 strikeouts.
Six different Beaver players tallied hits in the contest and Burnum extended her hitting streak to five consecutive tourney games.
OSU improved to 15-1 on the season when hitting at least two home runs in a game. The Beavers have a school record 61 homers on the year and have hit two home runs in each of the last three outings.
Oregon State rides a four-game winning streak into Sunday's championship game against the Sooners.
OSU and UO faced each other in the 2000 Regional Championship game, with Oklahoma winning a 3-2 outing en route to taking the College World Series title.
Five Pacific-10 Conference teams have reached the 2003 Regional Championship game, excluding University of Oregon, who is still competing in a semi-final contest. The eight different Regional champions make up the field for the College World Series.
