Ellsbury Extends Streak; Jarvis Just A Hit And A Homer Away

May 18, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - Jacoby Ellsbury pushed his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games but Oregon State lost to No. 20 Arizona 9-4 in Pacific-10 baseball on Sunday night at Sancet Field. Andy Jarvis homered for the Beavers, putting him just one hit and one home run away from tying OSU's career records in those categories.

The Beavers (22-28 overall, 6-17 Pac-10) and Wildcats (35-17, 13-7) finish their series Monday at 12 noon, and the game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240). OSU then wraps up the season on Wednesday when it meets Portland to finish a suspended game at make up a rained-out game; the suspended game will resume at 2 p.m., and KEJO will join that game in progress at p.m.

On Sunday, the Wildcats handed Oregon State junior lefthander Jake Postlewait his first loss of the season. Postlewait, who had a complete-game win over third-ranked Arizona State on Tuesday, worked into the sixth inning against UA and gave up eight runs on 13 hits, walking three and striking out three.

Arizona scored in each of the first three innings to build a 4-0 lead. After the Beavers picked up an unearned run off Wildcat righthander Sean Rierson in the top of the fourth, UA scored three times in the bottom of the inning for a 7-1 lead.

Jarvis hit his sixth homer of the season and the 33rd home run of his career to lead off the top of the ninth, leaving him one homer away from Joe Gerber's record set from 1997-2000. The line drive over the rightfield fence was the 230th hit of Jarvis' career, one short of the record set by Brian Barden from 2000-02.

Ellsbury wasted no time in extending his hitting streak, starting the game with a sharply hit groundball just inside first base for a double. He finished the night 1-for-4; it ended a run of five straight multi-hit games for the freshman outfielder.

'I'm just feeling real comfortable right now,' Ellsbury said. 'I've just got a lot of confidence going in there.'

It was also the fourth straight game in which Ellsbury led off the game with a hit.

'That first at-bat, I just want to see a lot of pitches,' Ellsbury said. 'The last four games, I've gotten a good one to hit and I've hit it hard.'

Ellsbury also had the best view of one of the Beavers' best defensive plays of the season - centerfielder Aaron Mathews' leaping, diving catch in the right-centerfield gap that robbed Richard Mercado of an extra-base hit. Mathews had a long run to get to the ball, then got great height on his jump and held onto the ball as he tumbled across the turf after landing.

'That was amazing,' said Ellsbury, who was heading for the fence to back Mathews up on the play. 'I didn't think he had a shot at it, but he just flew ... that was a spectacular catch.'

Mathews was 2-for-4 on the night, the only Beaver with more than on hit. Chris Biles also homered for the Beavers, lofting the ball over the right-centerfield fence with none on and two out in the eighth inning.
