May 19, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona baseball team rallied for 10 runs in the final three innings against Oregon State on Monday, but it wasn't quite enough as the Beavers held on to down the Wildcats, 13-12.

The loss dropped Arizona to 37-18 for the season and 13-8 in the Pac-10. Oregon State snapped a three-game losing streak with win and improved to 23-28 for the season and 7-17 in the Pac-10.

Trailing 8-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats scored seven runs in the inning to take a tentative 9-8 lead. Arizona sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame and tallied six hits, including a pair of two-run singles by Lee Franklin and Jeff Van Houten.

Keyed by a two-run double by Tony Calderon, the Beavers responded with five runs in the top of the eighth to recapture the lead at 13-9. Arizona relievers Mark Worrell and John Meloan gave up a combined four hits and three walks in the frame to let OSU back into the game.

Arizona made another charge in the bottom of the inning to cut the 13-9 lead to two on Moises Duran's RBI ground out and Dallas Haught's solo home run.

John Hardy's two-out single to right in the ninth scored Nick Hundley to move Arizona within one at 13-12, but the sophomore shortstop was caught stealing on a 2-2 pitch to pinch hitter Joe Frazier to end the game.

Worrell (2-4) was charge with his fourth loss of the season after giving up three runs on two hits in just a third of an inning. OSU's Noel Clark (1-0) picked up his first win of the year and Nathan Pendley closed out the win for his first save.

Arizona, which used 22 of the 25 players eligible for the game in the contest, tallied 15 hits to OSU's 13. Freshman Hundley led all Arizona players with a 3 for 5, two-RBI, two-run day at the plate. Junior Brian Anderson and sophomore Jeff Van Houten finished 2 for 4 and 2 for 5, respectively. Franklin, who entered the game in the seventh, finished 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.

OSU's Seth Pietsch went 3 for 3 with a home run and three runs scored for the Beavers in the win.
