GAINESVILLE, Fla. - University of Oregon women's tennis sophomore Daria Panova won her first-round match Monday at the NCAA Championships in Gainesville, Fla., 6-1, 6-1, against Georgia Tech's Jaime Wong. Panova will face California's Christina Fusano in the second round Tuesday at 9 a.m. EDT.
'She played solid,' Oregon coach Nils Schyllander said. 'It was good to get the first round out of the way. She's still getting used to the climate.'
The match was played in high heat and humidity, which should be the norm for the remaining days of the tournament. Panova, ranked No. 15, took an early lead on No. 43 Wong and never relinquished it, winning in a little more than an hour.
Panova has faced No. 25 Fusano once this season, losing in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals. Panova has now won 10 straight singles matches in tournament play, including winning the Pac-10 Indoor Championships and the Pac-10 Championships.
Junior Courtney Nagle lost her first round match to UCLA's Jackie Carleton, 6-3, 6-2. Nagle, originally an alternate, was added to the singles draw late last week.
Nagle and Panova, the No. 33-ranked doubles pair in the country, will play in the first round of the doubles draw Tuesday afternoon against North Carolina's No. 7-ranked tandem of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis.
