Dea Sumantri Cruises Through NCAA Second Round Match
May 20, 2003
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Washington sophomore Dea Sumantri earned her second straight upset victory, winning her second round match at the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship in Gainesville, Fla., Tuesday morning, to advance to the third round of the competition tomorrow.
After downing 11th-ranked Alice Barnes (Stanford) in the first round Monday, 34th-ranked Sumantri took care of 30th-ranked Candice Fuchs (William & Mary) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, today. Sumantri will counter the tournament's fourth-seeded player, Agata Cioroch (Georgia) in the third round on Wednesday.
With her win today, Sumantri became just the third player in Husky history to win at least 30 matches in a single season. With her 30-8 overall record, she is just one win away from tying for second on the all-time season wins list. Kristina Kraszewski ranks second with 31 wins in 1998, while UW junior Claire Carter holds the record with 32 victories in 2001.
Sumantri is Washington's lone competitor in the individual portion of the NCAA Championships that continue through May 24.
