Weather Hammers Field at NCAA Women's Golf

May 20, 2003

West Lafayette, IN - Washington junior Lindsay Morgan opened play at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships with an 8-over 80 at Purdue's Kampen Golf Course. Morgan is tied for 47th place and just four strokes out of 10th place. The Husky junior and the remainder of the field had to battle a tough day of weather that prevented any player from breaking par and saw scores balloon in the wet, windy conditions.

'Lindsay had the misfortune to draw a starting time in the morning session when the conditions were at their worst,' said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'For a while out there it was just raining sideways.'

More than half of the field shot at least nine-over on the par-72, 6,225-yard course. Only defending NCAA Champion Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke managed an even-par round. Southern California grabbed a four-stroke lead for the team title after posting a 17-over score of 305. Washington State had the misfortune of shooting 55-over 343.

Morgan was 3-over after her first 11 holes before posting back-to-back double bogies and bogies over the next four holes. She managed one birdie near the end of her round.

'Just like rain and wind usually do, it made the course harder today,' said Morgan, who finished fourth at the NCAA West Regional. 'Seriously though, I actually had fun out there today despite the conditions. I think I played decent. I should not have had double bogies on back-to-back hole. That was my mistake and I can correct that.'

Morgan is anxious to return to play during Wednesday's afternoon session when conditions are expected to improve. '

'The course sets up well for my game because I think the long game is one of my strengths,' she said. 'It's a different type of motivation playing without my teammates. I think there's less pressure. I can take more chances and not have to worry about being conservative and trying to do what is best for the team. I think I'm playing well. We've got three more days to play so I'm anxious to see what I can do.'
