Fresno State Rallies With Three In Bottom Of The Ninth

May 20, 2003

FRESNO, Calif. - Pinch hitter Kyle Atrat hit a game-winning, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday as the Fresno State Bulldogs rallied for the 6-5 win against the USC Trojans in non-conference action at Beiden Field. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the ninth.

USC (28-25) had a 4-0 lead going into the sixth. Anthony Lunetta hit his seventh home run of the season with a solo shot in the first, followed later in the inning by an RBI single by Jon Brewster. Lunetta went 4-for-4 on the night with two RBI.

Joey Metropoulos went 3-for-4 for the Trojans, adding his 10th homer of the season.

Fresno State (29-27) closed the game in the sixth with three runs, including a two-run homer by Brian Pierce. With two outs in the top of the ninth and down by two runs, catcher Ryan Rothford threw out Billy Hart at second on a steal attempt to give momentum to the Bulldogs. After an RBI double by Casey McGehee in the bottom of the ninth, the Trojans intentionally walked Pierce to load the bases. Atrat then hit the game-winner off reliever Bret Butler.

Butler (1-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits.

The Trojans travel to Washington for a Pac-10 Conference series that will have NCAA Tournament implications. USC is one game behind Washington for fourth place in the Pac-10 standings and most likely will need to win two of three in the series, which will begin on Friday (May 23) at 6:30 p.m. Both games on Saturday (May 24) and Sunday (May 25) will start at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on
