Manuel Kost Ousted in First Round at NCAA Championships
May 21, 2003
ATHENS, Ga. - Oregon sophomore Manuel Kost lost his first round match against Florida's Janne Holmia, 6-4, 6-3, Wednesday in Athens, Ga. Kost was making his first appearance in the NCAA Championships.
'He had a chance there and it kind of got away from him,' Oregon coach Chris Russell said. 'Manuel made a lot of progress this last month and hopefully this experience will serve him well.'
With Holmia leading, 6-4, 4-3, the match moved indoors because of rain. Holmia, ranked No. 6 nationally, quickly won the next two games to finish off the match and end Kost's season.
Kost, a native of Kuessnacht, Switzerland, finished the season with a record of 15-14, with the majority of his matches coming at the No. 1 position. Kost, who entered the tournament ranked No. 51, overcame an early season abdominal injury to become Oregon's first representative at the NCAA Championships since Guillermo Carter's All-America performance in 2000.
