LONG BEACH, Calif. - Oregon State's Birte Steven and Lynn Simmons were among the athletes selected to the Verizon Academic All-District VIII women's at-large second team, which was announced Thursday.
Steven, a junior swimmer, who was a third-team honoree a year ago, carries a 3.75 grade point average in psychology. She is a five-time All-American breaststroker who finished sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke at this year's NCAA Championships, good for the best ever finish by an OSU swimmer in any event. She was 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke race and also swam in the 200-yard individual medley at the NCAA Championships in March. She's a two-time Academic All-Pac-10 first team selection.
Simmons, a senior coxswain for the crew team, has a 3.96 in agricultural business management and earned a spot on the Academic All-District team for the first time. The team captain, Simmons is in her first year as part of the varsity eight boat and has helped the Beavers rank among the top 15 teams in the nation for much of the season. She was a first team Pac-10 All-Academic selection last year.
The women's at-large category includes crew, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, field hockey, swimming, gymnastics, water polo, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle. In order to be eligible for the Academic All-District Team, athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school.
