Deacon Named To Academic All-District VIII Second Team

Oregon State University student-athletes Jed Pennell and Sean Deacon have been named to Verizon Academic All-District VIII men's at-large teams, it was announced Thursday.

Pennell, a junior on the wrestling team, earned first team honors, while Deacon, a junior on the men's golf squad, was picked for the second team for the second year in a row.

As a first-team selection, Pennell is now placed on the national ballot, and is eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be released June 10.

Pennell carries a 3.83 grade point average, and majors in Exercise & Sport Science.

The Cave Junction, Ore., native earned first-team Pacific-10 All-Academic accolades each of the last two years, and finished second at 184 pounds at the Pac-10 Championships in March. Pennell competed at the NCAA Championships, but did not place.

Deacon maintains a 3.73 GPA as a Business Administration major, and was among those recently selected to attend the prestigious NCAA Leadership Conference. He was also a second-team Academic All-Pac-10 pick as a sophomore.

The Scottsdale, Ariz., native holds the OSU three-round scoring record with a 205, and averaged a career-best 73.5 strokes per round this year.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must maintain at GPA of 3.20 or better, and be a starter or significant substitute.
