Softball Defeats Oklahoma In World Series Opener, 3-1
May 22, 2003
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - A two-run double by Amanda Oleson in the seventh inning propelled the Washington softball team (47-14-1) to a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma (46-13) in the first round of the Women's College World Series this afternoon at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Sooners got on the scoreboard in the third inning with a leadoff home run by Jennifer Stump. The line drive, which cleared the left field wall, was her third home run of the year.
Oklahoma continued the rally with a single by Kami Keiter but Washington's defense shut the Sooners down. OU bunted in an attempt to move the runner to second but UW pitcher Tia Bollinger threw out Keiter on a bang-bang play. After Oklahoma advanced a runner to second on an infield ground out, Kristen Rivera picked off her seventh runner of the season to end the inning.
Washington took that momentum to the plate in the top of the fourth inning as Jaime Clark belted her 17th home run of the season into the third row of the left field bleachers.
The game remained locked a one until the seventh inning when Oleson delivered the game-winner. Washington's freshman opened the frame and placed runners on first and second with a lead off walk by Dena Tyson and a single up the middle by Aimee Minor.
Designated player Amy Hanson moved pinch runner Traci Tawney and Minor second and third with a surprise bunt. Oleson then blooped a double off the handle of the bat that fell in front of a diving Erin Evans in centerfield to score two.
Bollinger (28-9) picked up the win as she held the Sooners to three hits, while striking out two. Keiter (33-8) took the loss for Oklahoma, despite holding Washington to four hits and striking out eight.
The Huskies continue World Series action in the winners bracket with a game against No. 1 seed Arizona on Friday at 2:30 p.m. (PT). The Wildcats defeated Alabama, 3-2, in the first round early today. The game will air live on ESPN2.
