Tara Kirk Named To Academic All-District VIII Second Team

Long Beach, Calif. - Stanford junior women's swimmer Tara Kirk (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton HS) has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women's At-Large Second Team as selected by CoSIDA. Kirk is a Human Biology major with a 3.59 cumulative GPA. The at-large category includes student-athletes in the following women's sports: crew, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle.
Kirk had her third consecutive outstanding collegiate season in the pool in 2002-03, sweeping the 100 and 200 yard breast at the NCAA Championships to give her nine career NCAA titles (five individual). Kirk is also the current American record holder in both events, setting the 100 mark (58.41) to win the 2003 Pac-10 title and the 200 standard (2:07.36) to win the 2002 NCAA crown. All told, she has earned 12 collegiate All-American honors.
Kirk is also widely regarded as one of the top breaststrokers in the world, most recently winning the gold medal in the 100 meter breast at the 2003 Spring Nationals on April 4. Among other highlights was her University Games record-setting victory in the 50 meter breast (32:12) during the summer of 2001.
