#7 Cal Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to #3 Texas, 1-0

May 23, 2003

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Lindsay Gardner doubled to right center to lead off the sixth inning and would eventually score the game's only run as No. 3 Texas ended No. 7 Cal's 13-game postseason winning streak with a 1-0 victory Friday evening at the Women's College World Series at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

Texas improves to 49-7. Cal falls to 46-19 and moves into the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament.

Gardner took a 2-1 pitch to deep left centerfield to open the sixth and advanced to third on a delayed steal. She would come around to score the first run of the game on a groundout to third base by Chez Sievers. After another single and a walk, Cal starter Kelly Anderson was replaced by Kristina Thorson who came struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Bears managed to put runners in scoring position just twice. With two outs in the third, Kristen Morley beat out an infield single to the pitcher and Vicky Galindo followed with a single to left field. But Texas pitcher Cat Osterman threw one of her 17 strikeouts to end the threat.

Cal looked to be in position to make another charge as they came into the bottom of the seventh with the heart of their order scheduled to come to the plate. Veronica Nelson drew an unintentional intentional walk and was replaced by pinch runner LeAnna Hoglen. And with two outs, Kaleo Eldredge worked the count full and eventually drew a free pass to move Hoglen to second and into scoring position. But Osterman finished the game with yet another strikeout to keep the Lady Longhorns in the winner's bracket.

The Bears managed two hits against Osterman, named Wednesday as the national Collegiate Player of the Year, which is the most she has given up in six postseason games this year. But the total also ranks as the fewest that Cal has collected since it also hit just a pair 15 games ago against UCLA.

Over its last 59 postseason innings, Cal pitching has combined to allow just two earned runs (four total) while the Bears have scored 36 runs.

Cal now moves into the loser's bracket of the College World Series and will play again Saturday, May 24, at 4 p.m. PDT against the winner of Alabama vs. Oklahoma which takes place at 9 a.m. PDT. Should the Bears win that contest, they would advance to face Arizona for a chance to reach the championship game.
