May 23, 2003
Gainesville, Fla. - The Bears' Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones, a 5-8 seed, advanced to the title match of the NCAA Doubles Championships this afternoon, May 23 at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.
The Cal duo completed a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Virginia Commonwealth's SilviaUrickova/Barbora Zahnova to advance to the final match versus Kentucky's Sarah Witten and Amy Trefethen Saturday, May 24 immediatley following the 8:00 a.m. (PST) singles championship.
'They were a good team, but I think we took away what they like to do,' said Fusano after today's victory. 'With the angles, we didn't get frustrated like at the beginning they were getting a lot of balls back, but we used our lobs well.'
'A lot of teams don't have a player who lobs a lot, but she's (Fusano) got really great lobs,' said Kops-Jones. 'I think that has been a big reason why we have been able to get this far.'
