Bruin Softball Forces If-Game at WCWS, Will Face Texas Again Tonight
May 25, 2003
OKLAHOMA CITY - Senior Toria Auelua hit her sixth home run of the season on Sunday afternoon at Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium as UCLA defeated Texas by a score of 3-0. The Bruins and Longhorns will face off again approximately 30 minutes after the Cal-Arizona rematch has concluded. Both of those games will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
The Bruins loaded the bases in the top of the third inning, a rally that started with a one-out infield single by Andrea Duran. A two-out walk by Caitlin Benyi gave UCLA two runners on base. The pair advanced to second and third on a wild pitch during the at-bat of Tairia Mims. Mims started her at-bat getting behind in the count (0-2) but worked the count full, and loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch. Unfortunately, the Bruins were unable to convert, leaving the bases loaded. However, UCLA's offense forced UT's Cat Osterman to throw 62 pitches through three innings.
In the fourth, the Bruins took the lead, as Toria Auelua placed her sixth home run of the season over the fence in right center field. It was the 17th home run of the 2003 Women's College World Series, which is a new WCWS record.
UCLA added to their lead in the seventh inning, as Monique Mejia drew a lead-off walk. Mejia advanced to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by Andrea Duran, and scored on an RBI single by Natasha Watley. A fly ball to deep center field by Caitlin Benyi advanced Watley to third base. Tairia Mims was then intentionally walked and replaced by pinch runner Amanda Simpson, giving UCLA runners on the corners with two outs. Claire Sua then delivered with an RBI single, scoring Watley and giving UCLA a 3-0 lead.
UCLA and Texas will take the field at Hall of Fame Stadium again this evening, approximately 30 minutes after the Cal-Arizona game finishes. The Golden Bears and Wildcats are scheduled to throw their first pitch just before 7 pm Central Time. Cal forced an 'if game' by defeating the Wildcats 2-1 in 12 innings earlier this afternoon.
