Bruin Results from Day One of NCAA West Regionals

At the conclusion of the first day of the NCAA West Regional Championships, the Bruin women have automatically qualified three athletes for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor meet (shot putters Jessica Cosby and Briona Reynolds and long jumper Candice Baucham). Qualifying went as expected, led by junior Lena Nilsson (800m/1500m) and junior Sheena Johnson (100m hurdles/400m hurdles). The NCAA West Regional meet is the second of three major intercollegiate meets held in the State of California this outdoor season. On May 17-18 at USC, the Bruin women won their seventh consecutive Pac-10 title. On June 11-14, CS Sacramento will host the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Field Finals (4 Finals, the top five automatically qualify for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor. At -large berths will be announced Monday.)
Javelin - Junior Karina Powell placed 12th overall (141-9/3rd in flight two).
Pole Vault - Freshman Chelsea Johnson placed sixth (13-6.25, tied personal-best). Entering the meet, Johnson's mark of 13-6.25 was No. 6 on the U. S. collegiate chart, so she should be an at-large choice for the NCAA Outdoor. Sophomore Jamie Kolar was 12th with a personal best vault of 12-10.25 (3.92m, No. 6 in school history).
Shot Put - UCLA qualified two athletes to the NCAA Outdoor. Sophomore Jessica Cosby, the defending NCAA Outdoor champion who two weeks ago won the Pac-10 title, placed third (54-2.50) and sophomore Briona Reynolds was fifth (52-0.00).
Long Jump - Sophomore Candice Baucham, who won the Pac-10 triple jump two weeks ago, automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor, placing fifth (19-7.50).

1500m - Junior Lena Nilsson, the defending NCAA Outdoor Champion in this event who last week at the Prefontaine meet set a new Pac-10/UCLA record in the 1500m (4:07.69), ran the fastest qualifying time (4:24.48).
100m Hurdles - The Bruins qualified all three runners for Saturday's final. Junior Sheena Johnson, who won the Pac-10 title in this event two weeks ago, had the second fastest mark (13.13w,+3.6), freshman Dawn Harper, the third-fastest time (13.21w,+2.4) and junior Sani Roseby (13.28w, +2.6), the fifth-best mark.
400m - UCLA qualified two of its three runners to Saturday's final. Sophomore Monique Henderson won heat one (53.12) and junior Adia McKinnon was third (54.16). Not qualifying was sophomore T'Carra Penick, who placed fifth (55.26) in heat three.
100m - Junior Sani Roseby advanced to Saturday's final, with the final qualifying mark of 11.71 (season-best).
800m - Nilsson, who at the Pac-10 meet two weeks ago won both the 800m/1500 for the second year in a row, won heat one and her time of 2:04.79 was the event's top mark. Freshman Ashley Caldwell placed sixth in her heat (2:10.69) and did not qualify for Saturday's final.
400m Hurdles - The Bruins qualified two athletes for Saturday's final. Johnson, who two weeks ago won both hurdles at the Pac-10 meet, won heat two and had the fastest time of the day (58.32). Senior Ysanne Williams, who was second in this event at the league championships, won heat three with a time of 59.64 (fifth-best overall mark).
