May 30, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team shot a final-round 311 to finish in 17th place Friday at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla.
Arizona posted a 23-over-par 311 Friday and finished the 72-hole event with a 1,229 (+77) total. The Cats' final-round tally was its worst round of the 2002-03 season and led to the team's worst finish at the NCAA Championships since 1999. It marked just the second time this season that Arizona had failed to finish in the top 10. Clemson earned the national championship with a 1,191 (+39) total, finishing two strokes ahead of tournament-host Oklahoma State.
Individually, Ricky Barnes became the first golfer in Arizona history to post four consecutive top-20 finishes at the NCAA Championships. The senior from Stockton, Calif., shot a one-over-par 73 Friday and finished tied for sixth place at 292 (+4). Barnes, the only Wildcat to break par in the event, collected three birdies and 11 pars over the final round. Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares captured individual medalist honors with a 287 (-1) total. He was the only golfer in the 156-man field to finish below par.
Junior Chris Nallen was the only other Wildcat player to finish in the top half of the field. The Blairstown, N.J., native shot a three-over 75 to tied for 35th place at 303 (+15). Prior to the 2003 event, Nallen had finished at par or better in five of eight career NCAA Championship rounds.
Senior Brian Woolf, who made his first NCAA Championship appearance, carded a nine-over 81 and tied for 71st at 315 (+27). Also competing for the Wildcats was senior Andrew Medley, who tied for 80th place at 320 (+32), and senior Reid Hatley, who tallied an 82 (+10) and was 37 shots over par in 54 holes after withdrawing from Tuesday's opening round due to illness.
The 72-hole 2003 NCAA Men's Golf Championships was contested at Karsten Creek Golf Club, a par-72, 7,095-yard layout.
