Bruin Men Capture NCAA West Regional Title

At the conclusion of the NCAA West Regional Championships, the Bruins clinched the West Regional team title with 101 points, and 10 individual Bruins have advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 11-14 in Sacramento, CA. Individual qualifiers for the NCAA Championships were in the shot put (2), pole vault (2), 800m, 400m and 400m hurdles (3).

'All year, I knew that we had a good team,' said Venegas. 'We fell a little short at the Pac-10 Championships, although I thought that our point total was excellent. With a good effort here, I knew that we could be the winning team. The NCAA has given us another platform to excel and we will take advantage of that opportunity.'

In yesterday's action, three Bruins qualified for the NCAA Championships. Junior Juaune Armon won the long jump (26-2.75/7.99m, w: 0.0). And, in the discus, junior Dan Ames was the Regional Champion (195-4/59.53m) and senior Scott Wiegand was third (187-2/57.06m).

The top five Regional finishers in each event advance to the NCAA Championships. An additional 6-8 student-athletes will be admitted as at-large qualifiers based upon a seasonal best list The at-large qualifiers will be announced Monday, June 2.

Final Team Points (Top 5 of 26 teams) - 1. UCLA 101 , 2. USC 92, 3. Oregon 71, 4. Stanford 69, 5. Brigham Young 67.

Field Final Results

Javelin - No entries.

Pole Vault - Sophomore Yoo Kim placed second with a vault of 17-11 (5.46m) and scored eight points. Junior Pat Luke placed fifth with a personal best vault of 17-3 (5.26m), scoring four points. Both Kim and Luke automatically advance to the NCAA Championships.

Freshman Michael Landers placed 15th with a season best vault of 16-7.25 (5.06m) and sophomore Shane Hackett was 23rd (15-7.25/4.76m).

Shot Put - Junior Dan Ames won the shot put with a throw of 63-11.50 (19.49m). It is Ames' second Regional Championship title, having won the discus yesterday. Senior Scott Wiegand placed fifth, scoring four points, with a throw of 58-11.50 (18.38m). Both Ames and Wiegand automatically advance to the NCAA Championships.

Freshmen Jeremy Silverman and Jake Knight placed seventh and 11th, respectively. Silverman threw 58-11.50 (17.24m). Knight threw 56-6.75 (17.24m).

Triple Jump - No entries.

Track Final Results

4x100m Relay - No entry.

1500m - Sophomore Jon Rankin placed sixth in 3:48.34, scoring three points.

110m Hurdles - Sophomore Anthony Golston placed sixth in 14.02 (w: -0.9), scoring three points.

400m - Freshman Craig Everhart placed fifth in 46.78, scoring four points. As a top-five finisher, Everhart automatically advances to the NCAA Championships.

100m - No entries.

800m - Junior Nick Thornton placed second in 1:50.30, scoring eight points. Thornton automatically advances to the NCAA Championships.

400m Hurdles - The Bruins swept the 400m hurdles. Senior Kyle Erickson won in 50.14, scoring 10 points. Sophomore Jonathan Williams placed second in a personal best 50.51, scoring eight points. And, senior John Barbieri placed third in a personal best 50.66, scoring six points. All three advance to the NCAA Championships.

200m - No entries.

3000m Steeplechase - Sophomore Erik Emilsson placed 19th in 9:15.35 and senior Justin Patananan was 2nd in 9:21.03. Neither advance to the NCAA Championships.

4x400m Relay - The 1600m relay team of Denye' Versher, Kyle Erickson, Nick Thornton and Craig Everhart placed fourth in 3:08.21, scoring five points. The top three finishers automatically advance to the NCAA Championships.
