Varsity eight places ninth at IRAs.

The No. 8 Oregon State men's varsity eight placed ninth at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships Saturday on the Cooper River. The junior varsity finished seventh and the novice eight was eighth.

The varsity eight's ninth-place showing matched OSU's third-best performance at the IRAs.

'The whole team had a phenomenal regatta,' first-year head coach Kjell Oswald said. 'The field was extremely competitive, and I think the guys put forth their best effort of the year.

'Our goal coming in was to finish in the top 12, so there wasn't a sense of `do-or-die' today and everyone was able to enjoy the racing.'

The varsity eight, racing in the Petite Final to determine places 7-12, finished third with a time of five minutes, 53.79 seconds, just 0.19 seconds back of second-place Navy. Brown won in 5:50.34.

With the top five boats, including Temple and Rutgers, even at the 1,000-meter mark, Brown, OSU and Navy pulled away from the pack. Brown opened a half-length lead over OSU and Navy, which remained deadlocked until crossing the line.

The JV, rowing in the Grand Final (places 1-7, in this race), finished seventh with a time of 6:11.02. California won in 5:53.13, and OSU crossed the line less than five seconds back of sixth-place Stanford.

OSU's novice eight finished second in it's Petite Final with a time of 6:08.20 to earn eighth place overall. Even with Yale with 500 meters to go, the Beavers made a charge, nearly catching first-place Cornell down the stretch and finishing 1.11 seconds back.

'All three boats had great races Saturday,' Oswald said. 'Getting into the top 12 is pretty impressive; I think the races were as good as we've had back here.

'The seniors left this program better off than when they came in, and they helped the program progress,' Oswald said. 'Both (assistant coach Steve Todd) and I are proud of the way they and the team raced.'

Harvard claimed the varsity eight title, beating second-place Washington in the Grand Final by over three seconds.
