Stanford To Host Long Beach State In Super Regional Friday-Sunday

June 2, 2003

Stanford (44-15) will host Long Beach State (41-18) in one of eight NCAA Super Regionals at Sunken Diamond this Friday-Sunday, June 6-8, 2003 (7:05 pm, 5:05 pm, 3:05 pm, if necessary, PDT). The Super Regional format is a best two-of-three series with the winner of each of the eight Super Regionals advancing to the 57th College World Series to be played June 13-23, 2003, at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska. All eight Super Regionals will be part of the inaugural ESPN College Grand Slam television package.

Stanford will be looking to extend its school record streak of trips to the College World Series to five after winning Super Regionals each of the last four years versus USC (1999, 2002), Nebraska (2000) and South Carolina (2001). The Cardinal has made 14 trips to the College World Series, coming away with CWS titles in 1987 and 1988 while finishing as runners-up in 2000 and 2001.

Stanford and Long Beach State last played in a 2002 NCAA Regional at Stanford when the Cardinal took a pair of games from the 49ers to advance to the 2002 NCAA Super Regionals. Stanford won a 5-4 game in the Regional winners' bracket game and then picked up an 8-4 decision in the Regional title game.

Stanford earned a spot in this year's Super Regional by sweeping three straight games in Regional action last Friday-Sunday. The top-seeded Cardinal opened its Regional with a 9-2 victory over fourth-seeded Illinois-Chicago on Friday. Stanford picked up a 13-6 win over third-seeded UC Riverside on Saturday before knocking off second-seeded Richmond by a score of 19-6 in Sunday's first championship game.

Long Beach State also reached the Super Regional with three straight wins in Regional action. The 49ers opened their Regional with a 6-1 victory over fourth-seeded Pepperdine on Friday. Long Beach State then defeated third-seeded Washington twice by identical 7-2 scores in Saturday's winners' bracket game and Sunday's championship contest.
