Cincinnati Reds Select Richie Gardner In MLB Draft

TUCSON, Ariz.- Junior Richie Gardner joined classmate Brian Anderson in the Major League Draft on Tuesday when the Cincinnati Reds selected him with the 14th pick (No. 171 overall) in the sixth round.
Gardner, a junior college transfer from Santa Rosa JC, was Arizona's Friday night starter in 2003. The right-hander went 9-3 with a 4.49 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 108 1/3 innings pitched in 2003. An All-Pac-10 honoree, he finished the season as Arizona's leader in strikeouts, innings pitched and tied for the team lead in wins.
Drafted in the 24th round by Texas in the 2001, Gardner was listed by Baseball America as the No. 8 pro prospect in the state of Arizona for this season's draft.
