June 10, 2003
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - California outside hitter Jenna Brown has been selected one of 20 athletes invited to train with USA Volleyball's Women's National A2 Program, the organization announced today. Brown, a 5-11 sophomore to be this fall from Houston, Tex., is slated to be a libero with the national squad. The A2 squad will train from July 5-20 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York.
The National A2 Program features some of college and junior volleyball's top stars, including four members of the 2002 NCAA Champion USC Trojans. No tournaments are scheduled for the A2 squad, but the group will be training for potential consideration for the 2004 Olympic Games, World University Games and/or Pan American Games teams in the future.
The A2 team will be led by head coach Paula Weishoff-Hanold, a two-time Olympic medallist on the USA women's national team and a top assistant coach at USC. Weishoff-Hanold will be assisted by Anne Kordes of Illinois and Robby Pulliza of Texas.
Last season as a first-year player for the Bears, Brown was a member of the Pacific-10 Conference All-Freshman Team. She competed in every match for Cal, recording 340 kills and leading the team with 365 digs, helping the Bears to a 20-12 record and their first NCAA appearance since 1989.
