Men's Track & Field First Day Update from the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships

Sacramento, CA - First day results from the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Sacramento State at Hornet Stadium in the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex.

The men's favorites for the team title are No. 1 Arkansas/No. 1 Auburn, No. 3 USC, No. 4 UCLA and No. 5 Mississippi State.

Field (All Qualifying)
Pole Vault - Both sophomore Yoo Kim and junior Pat Luke advance to Friday's pole vault final. Kim and Luke each vaulted 16-10.75 (5.15m).
Long Jump - Junior Juaune Armon, the NCAA West Regional and Pac-10 Champion, placed fourth in flight two (4th-tied overall) with a jump of 25-9.50 (7.86m, +3.0). Armon advances to Friday's final.
Shot Put - Junior Dan Ames, the NCAA West Regional and Pac-10 Champion, placed second in flight three (fourth overall) with a throw of 63-4.25 (19.31m). Senior Scott Wiegand placed second in flight one (ninth overall) with a throw of 60-2 (18.34m). Freshman Jeremy Silverman, also competing in flight one, placed fourth (13th overall) with a throw of 59-1.25 (18.01m). Both Ames and Wiegand advance to Friday's final.

Track (All Qualifying)
800m - Junior Nick Thornton placed sixth in heat two (20th-tied overall) in 1:50.56. Thornton did not advance to Thursday's semifinal.
3,000m SC - Sophomore Erik Emilsson placed 12th in heat two, 24th overall, in 8:56.59. Emilsson did not advance to Friday's final.
400m Hurdles - In heat one of the 400m hurdles, senior Kyle Erickson, the NCAA West Regional Champion, placed third in 50.32. Sophomore Jonathan Williams, who placed second at the NCAA West Regionals, placed fourth in 51.79. In heat three, senior John Barbieri, who was third at the NCAA West Regional, placed fifth in 51.22. Both Erickson and Barbieri advance to Thursday's semifinal as time qualifiers.
