Huskies' Walker Earns Academic All-America Honors
June 17, 2003
SEATTLE - Washington senior Brad Walker, who in May won his second-consecutive Pac-10 pole vault title, was one of 17 athletes named Tuesday to the 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-America first-team for men's track and field and cross-country. The Spokane, Wash., native graduated from the University's School of Business on Saturday with a 3.52 cumulative grade-point average.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Verizon Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large.
A graduate of Spokane's University High School, Walker captured the NCAA indoor pole vault title with a Pac-10 record vault of 19 feet, 0 1/4 inches that equaled the third-best indoor mark in the world in 2003, and currently ranks second by an American vaulter this year. After leading all collegiate vaulters by several inches for most of the outdoor season, Walker saw his chance to sweep the NCAA indoor and outdoor titles dashed in May by a broken hand.
The Verizon Academic All-America honor is the latest in a long line of accolades for Walker, who just yesterday was named MONDO's West District Track and Field Athlete of the Year after winning his second Pac-10 title. The three-time NCAA All-American was also named as a recipient of the prestigious Pac-10 Medal, awarded by the conference commissioner to the top male and female student-athlete at each member institution, and was named Washington's Student-Athlete of the Year at the athletic department's 2003 Academic Convocation.
While his outdoor eligibility is exhausted, Walker plans to use his one remaining season of indoor eligibility to defend his 2003 NCAA indoor title next season, before focusing his attention on qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
