Cal Athletes Compete at USATF Championships

BERKELEY - Several members from the University of California's track and field teams will compete at the USA Track and Field National Championships held at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field, June 19-22. The top three finishers in each event who have met the qualifying standard will represent the United States in Paris, France at the 2003 World Championships.

The USATF National Championships also serves as a selection method for the Pan American Games and World University Games, in addition to the World Championships.

Golden Bear hurdlers Ahmad Wright and Tim Bogdanof and high jumper Teak Wilburn head across the bay along with 800m specialist Chloe Jarvis. Wright, Bogdanof and Wilburn's preliminary rounds begin on Friday, while Jarvis' prelim is on Thursday. Additionally, a contingent of Cal alumni will compete at the elite meet. Former Bears Magdalena Lewy (10,000m), Elissa Riedy (1500m), Missy Vanek (Heptathlon), Bevan Hart (Decathlon) and Kristin Heaston (shot put) are vying for a spot on the national team.

The USATF Junior Championships are held in conjunction with the seniors and Bridget Duffy (1500m), Jacqueline Earls (100m), Antonette Carter (100m/long jump), Kevin Davis (3000mSC) and Abadir Barre (5000m) will represent Cal in that meet. Duffy's 1500m run and Carter's long jump take place Saturday, while the remaining events take place on Sunday. The top two finishers qualify for Junior Pan American Games held in the Bahamas later this summer.
