June 19, 2003

UCLA junior Roy Moon lost in the second round of match play at the 92nd California State Amateur Championship Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links and former teammate Spencer Levin advanced to the third round of the same event with a convincing victory.

Moon lost 1-up to 48-year old Buzz Peel of Delray Beach, FL and Levin defeated 22-year old Mark Warman of San Clemente 7 & 6.

Peel took the early lead with a par at No.1 while Moon bogeyed the first hole. Peel went 2-up with a par at the fourth hole after Moon bogeyed again. Both players made bogey at the par 3 fifth and both players halved again with birdies at the par 5 sixth. They each halved Nos. 7 and 8, but Moon cut the margin with a par at the ninth hole while Peel made bogey. Both players birdied the par 4 10th. At the par 4 11th, Moon squared the match with a birdie to Peel's bogey. Both players matched pars for the next four holes until Moon's bogey at No.16 gave Peel a 1-up lead. The final two holes were halved.

Levin, who won the 2002 Northern California Amateur, continued his match play success with a resounding victory over Warman, one of the top players on the West Coast.
