Silva and Cordeiro Sign Professional Contracts

June 20, 2003

Doug Silva (Danville/Amador Valley HS) signed a free-agent contract with the Colorado Rockies and Chris Cordeiro (Thousand Oaks/Thousand Oaks HS) signed with the Texas Rangers after being drafted by the club in the 29th round.

Silva, who was named the Bruins' Most Outstanding Pitcher at the 2003 banquet, became only the fourth Bruin to put together an unbeaten season on the mound with his 6-0 mark. A Pac-10 Honorable Mention this season, Silva boasted a team-low 3.86 ERA with three saves.

Cordeiro was UCLA's saves leader with four in 2003. His 4.63 ERA was the third-best mark on the team. With a team-high 21 appearances, Cordeiro put together an impressive 5.2 strikeout-to-walk ratio, walking only eight batters in 50.2 innings of work.

Fellow draftee Mike Kunes, who signed with the San Francisco Giants organization has been assigned to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in the short-season Northwest League.
