Mitchum & Anderson Finish Action in USA Jr. Champs

June 22, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - Freshmen Eric Mitchum and Travis Anderson wrapped up action for the University of Oregon men's track and field team with top-eight finishes in the USA Junior Championships at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field Sunday.

In the 110 hurdles, Mitchum missed qualifying for the Pan American Junior Championships in the Barbados by one position and .06 seconds with his third-place effort in the final (13.81, w:-0.4), and was edged only by South Carolina's Kenneth Ferguson (first, 13.60) and unattached entrant Dexter Faulk (second, 13.75). Mitchum qualified for the final after clocking the second-fastest time in the prelims (14.18, w:-1.7).

Also in the sprints, Duck frosh Anderson took eighth in the 400 final (47.48) with a .01-second season best that was only .39 seconds shy of his personal best from his prep career. The Arvada, Colo., native advanced to the final with a clocking of 47.63 from the previous day's prelims that ranked him fourth among the two prelims.

The Duck men's and women's track and field teams capped one of their most successful seasons in recent memory. The Duck men took third in the Pac-10 Champs - only 12 points behind the league champion - and featured three individual champions, while the sixth-place UO women featured a meet and then-school record by pole vault champ Becky Holliday (14-6). At the NCAA level, the Oregon men and women sent 14 and eighth qualifiers, respectively, and came away with nine All-America honors (6M, 3W) - including Becky Holliday's NCAA win - to fuel their 13th- and 17th-place NCAA finishes - the first time since 1992 that both achieved a top-20 placing.
