Former Huskies Player Fred Small Killed In Accident

DIAMOND BAR, Calif. (AP) - Fred Small, a police motorcycle officer whoplayed football at the University of Washington in the early 1980s, diedTuesday of injuries from a three-vehicle crash.

Small's motorcycle and two other cars collided on the Pomona Freeway lateMonday. Small, 39, died at Pomona Valley Hospital, Inglewood, Calif., policeLt. Mike McBride said.

A 16-year-old girl lost control of her car on the right side of the freewayand it swerved and collided with a car in the next lane, and then both cars hitSmall's motorcycle, the California Highway Patrol said.

One of two men in the second car was hospitalized with moderate injuries.The girl and her 16-year-old male passenger were both uninjured, the CHP said.

Small played linebacker at Washington from 1981-84, earning All-Pacific-10Conference honors his senior season. He was drafted by Pittsburgh in 1985, andplayed one season with the Steelers.
