Trojan Swim Stars In Action At Santa Clara Grand Prix Meet

June 27, 2003

The swim season continues its march toward the X Fina World Championships in July and the Pan Am Games, U.S. Summer Nationals and World University Games in August and the circuit of meets to work out the kinks has almost ended.

Only a few remain.

This weekend's Santa Clara Swim Club's 36th Annual International Invitational (June 26-29) and the Janet Evans Invitational on the USC campus (July 10-13) are the two remaining warm-up meets on the West Coast.

The Santa Clara and Janet Evans meets are both U.S. Grand Prix events, run as part of the USA Swimming Grand Prix series. The Grand Prix series was started by United States Swimming as a way to bring together the finest swimmers in this country through a series of meets leading up to the U.S. Summer Nationals.

For a few, however, the meets are also final tune-ups for the summer's big international meets.

Close to 20 members of USC Coach Mark Schubert's Trojan Club will be at the Santa Clara International Swim Center this weekend, including USC Olympic medallists Linday Benko, Erik Vendt and Kaitlin Sandeno.

Benko and Vendt will compete for the U.S. at the World Championships (July 20-27) while Jeff Lee will race with the U.S. at the Pan Am Games (Aug. 1-16). J.D. Abercrombie and Trent Staley will then join the Americans at the World University Games (Aug. 21-31).

Among the other Trojan Club veterans also competing this weekend are USC All-Americans Michala Kwasny, Jana Krohn, Kammy Miller, Margie Pedder, Joanna Fargus, Trent Staley and Ous Mellouli. Also competing are USC NCAA Championship veterans Marisa Kozak, David Ringe and Joy Galloway.
