CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Brad Simpson has signed a national letter of intent to play golf for Oregon State University, men's head coach Brian Watts announced Tuesday.
Simpson transferred from South Mountain Junior College in Phoenix, Ariz., where he was a junior college Distinguished Academic All-American following his sophomore year in 2003.
Simpson will be a junior with two years of eligibility at OSU.
As a sophomore, Simpson also earned Junior College Division II All-Region I recognition for his play, finishing in the top 10 in five of six tournaments last spring. He was also named All-Arizona Junior College Conference.
'I'm real excited to go to OSU and to help the program,' Simpson, from Vancouver, Wash., said. 'I've always wanted to play Pac-10 golf, and I liked the location of Corvallis and being close to home.
'They have a young program. Coach Watts - I felt really comfortable with, and I like his personality, his goals, and where the team is going.'
Simpson helped South Mountain to a runner-up finish at the junior college national championships as a sophomore, and finished 18th individually.
As a freshman, Simpson helped the squad to a fifth-place finish after the team won its regional championship.
Simpson averaged 72.8 strokes over his junior college career, which was highlighted by a second-place finish at the Pima Invitational as a sophomore, where he shot 66-71-137.
'We feel very fortunate that Brad made the decision to come to Oregon State, and he's going to have an immediate impact on our program,' Watts said. 'He's worked extremely hard over the last two years, and has raised his level of play to where he's caught the attention of all the Division I coaches.
'He has great character and has done well in the classroom.'
Simpson attended Prairie High School, in Vancouver, Wash., where he was a state championship qualifier and All-Greater St. Helens League. He also earned a letter in baseball as a thirdbaseman/pitcher.
