Cal Alumni Update--Upshaw Named Athlete of the Week
July 1, 2003
Former California track and field long jumper Grace Upshaw was named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week, as announced today by the USATF organization. The selection is the first for Upshaw this year.
Upshaw earned the honor following her win (22-11.25) at the 2003 Norwich Union Challenge at Glasgow, Scotland. With her victory last Sunday, Upshaw defeated Russia's Tatyana Kotova, who is currently ranked as the No. 1 long jumper in the world by the IAAF. Upshaw's win ended Kotova's run of 18 months without a loss.
The 2003 USA Outdoor champion, Upshaw edged out Kotova with her leap of 22-11.25. Kotova-the 2003 World Indoor gold medallist, 2002 European and World Cup champion and 2001 World Outdoor silver medallist-finished as the runner-up to Upshaw with a best of 22-9.25.
Now it its third year, the USATF Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
