Bruin Volleyball Players in Italy
July 3, 2003
For 10 years the small town of Communanza, high in the Italian Alps, has hosted a women's summer volleyball tournament open to college-age players from Europe and the United States. This year, UCLA's Tammy Jackson and Morgan Smith are playing for team Third Degree as part of a delegation sponsored by Bring It USA, founded by former UCLA All-American Tim Kelly.
Although team Third Degree lost its first match 3-0 to Busco Auchan Ancona on June 30, Jackson and Smith are enjoying their stay in the small, Italian mountain community, which honored all the teams in its annual pre-tournament parade.
Third Degree won its next match 3-0 against a team from Hungary on July 1. The key to the match, according to players and coaches was their home court advantage in Communanza.
The travelogue has taken the team to the Sistine Chapel in Rome, the Marche Region where they viewed the mountains from Montemonaco, the popular Ristorante Futura and their home away from home, Casa Giosa--a local convent. For more information and a trip diary, accessVolley Central
