UW Men's Eight Rows into Henley Semifinals
July 4, 2003
HENLEY, England - The Washington men's varsity eight advanced into the semifinals while the four was narrowly defeated in the quarterfinal round, Friday at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames River.
The Ladies Challenge Plate competition for eight-oared crews began with eight boats and has been pared to four. Racing continues for two more days, culminating in Sunday's championship race.
Washington covered the 1-mile, 550-yard (2,112 meter) course in 6-minutes, 21-seconds. That was seven seconds faster than any other competitor in the Ladies Challenge Plate event. The only other U.S. crew remaining in the competition, Rutgers University, recorded the second-fastest time of 6:28 in a win over Dartmouth University.
The Huskies led the entire race en route to a 2 1/4 boat-length victory over a crew comprised of rowers from the Nottingham & Union Rowing Club and the London Rowing Club. They will meet the Molesey Boat Club & Imperial College of London combined entry in Saturday's semifinal round. That crew posted a time of 6:35 in a win over the Frankfurter, Germany entry.
The Washington eight includes seven rowers and coxswain Ryan Marks from the crew that won the 2003 Pac-10 championship and was the runner-up at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships. The crew includes John Lorton, Marko Petrovic, Brett Newlin, Giuseppe Lanzone, Kyle Larson, Sam Burns and Andy Derrick along with stroke Ian Sawyer who rowed on the UW junior varsity during the season.
This is the first Henley appearance for the Husky men since 1997 when the varsity eight lost by one foot in the championship race to the Notts County Oxford Brookes crew that served as the British National lightweight eight.
The 164th renewal of the regatta that began in 1839 features a unique match-race format with two boats racing side-by-side. The winner advances to the next round while the loser is eliminated.
The other Washington entry, a four with coxswain, was defeated after winning races the previous two days in the Britannia Challenge Cup. The Huskies led for much of the race before being overtaken by the Isis Boat Club of England which edged UW by two feet at the finish line. The winning time was 7:09.
The Husky four had advanced to the quarterfinals with victory over a pair of British crews, the Agecroft Rowing Club and the Henley Rowing Club.
Washington's four included coxswain Chris O'Brien along with Scott Gault, John Taylor, Jeff Jorgensen and Mathew Kopicky. Four of those athletes were members of the Huskies' national runner-up junior varsity eight crew. Jeff Jorgensen rowed on UW's national champion varsity four.
