Europe Claims Lead After Day One of Palmer Cup by Monster

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. � After falling behind 3-1 during the morning four-ball session, Team Europe claimed five of eight singles matches Thursday afternoon to surge to a 7-5 lead after the first day of the Palmer Cup by Monster. This annual Ryder Cup-style competition is being played at the distinguished Cassique at The Kiawah Island Club courtesy of Monster Worldwide, Inc.

After an hour and 15-minute delay following the opening round due to possible inclement weather, the European team came out blazing, winning five singles matches and halving two others. Wilhelm Schauman led the charge for Europe, winning his match 7 and 6 over Adam Rubinson and tallying six birdies through 12 holes. Spanish Amateur Champ and Team Europe captain Gonzalo Fdez.-Castaqo, defeated Bill Haas, 3 and 2, while Wales National Champion David Price downed Jason Hartwick, 3 and 1. Oliver Wilson and Alejandro Caqizares also claimed victories for Europe. Brandt Snedeker claimed the lone singles match for Team USA. Peter Tomasulo (USA) and David Skinns (EUR) halved their match, as did Ryan Moore (USA) and Pdr Nilsson.

In the morning four-ball matches, Haas and Chris Nallen of the United States won the first match of the event, 4 and 3. The U.S. team took a 1-up lead on hole five that it never relinquished. Nallen birdied Nos. 14 and 15 to clinch the match. Bray and Snedeker downed Castaqo and Inglis, 2 and 1, to give Team USA a 2-0 lead. Bray tallied eight birdies in the round. Team Europe won its first point when Price and Skinns overcame a four-hole deficit to defeat Rubinson and Tomasulo. Price and Skinns never led until hole 17. The United States rallied to win the final match of the morning session when Hartwick and Moore beat Nilsson and Schauman, 1-up.

The U.S. team leads the Palmer Cup Series, 4-1-1, and has won all three matches in the United States.
