Men's Golfer Alejandro Canizares Wins Palmer Cup Match

ASU men's golfer Alejandro Canizares defeated Dustin Bray, a first-team PING All-American, 1-up after the first round of the 2003 Palmer Cup in Kiawah Island, S.C. on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, Canizares, the 2003 NCAA Champion, and his partner, three-time PING All-American Oliver Wilson, lost to Bill Haas and Chris Nallen 4 and 3.
Canizares is playing for the European team in this week's tournament that features both singles matches and foursome pairings. During the morning four-ball matches, the European team was down 3-1, but came back in the afternoon singles matches to take a 7-5 lead.
Play continues Friday morning with foursome match pairings in which Canizares and Spanish Amateur Champion Gonzalo Fdez-Castano face off against Haas and Nallen.
In June, Canizares began his summer schedule by tying for seventh place at the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur tournament in Johnstown, Pa.
During his freshmen season at ASU, Canizares led the Sun Devils with three top-five finishes and a 71.65 stroke average. He also was awarded the Pride/Softspikes Freshman of the Year and was named to both the PING All-America Team and the Softspikes All-Freshmen Team.
ASU Men's Golf finished sixth at the NCAA Championship this past season.
