New Start on the Horizon for Arizona Soccer
July 11, 2003
The 2003 season and a brand new start aren't far away for the University of Arizona women's soccer program. With the hiring of 2002 Pac-10 Coach of the Year Dan Tobias in late June, the future of Wildcat soccer looks very bright indeed.
'I am ecstatic to be the new coach at the University of Arizona,' said Tobias, who comes to Tucson after five years as head women's soccer coach at Washington State. 'This is a university that strives for and achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. I am also honored to be able to work for such outstanding people as Jim Livengood and Rocky LaRose.
'In talking to the soccer student-athletes, we are all excited about the prospects for this fall season and beyond. This is a very exciting time for Wildcat soccer.'
Tobias' official start date at the UA will be Friday, July 18, although he will have to remain in the Pullman, Wash., area for a few days beyond that. He is the U-19 Region IV Olympic Development Program head coach, and he will be conducting the Region IV ODP Invitational Pool in Moscow, Idaho, from July 19-24.
Tobias will be in his UA office full-time beginning Monday, July 28. The team reports on Monday, Aug. 11, and practice officially begins on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
The Cats will play an exhibition game at UTEP on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. CDT, then they open the 2003 season by playing host to Weber State, Kent State and Iowa State for the Arizona Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 31, at Murphey Soccer Stadium (15th Street & Plumer Avenue). Weber State and Kent State face-off in the first game on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by Arizona versus Iowa State at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Weber State will play Iowa State at 12 p.m., with Arizona and Kent State capping the tournament at 2 p.m.
