Men's Golfer Alejandro Canizares Leads Europeans To Palmer Cup Victory
July 15, 2003
ASU Men's golfer Alejandro Canizares helped lead the European team to victory over the U.S. in last week's Palmer Cup in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Canizares, the 2003 NCAA Champion, won both of his singles matches during the two-day tournament. He defeated Dustin Bray 1 up on Thursday and Brandt Snedeker 3 and 1 on Friday. Also, Canizares and Gonzolo Castano beat Bill Haas and Chris Nallen 3 and 1 in Friday's foursome.
Canizares took control of Friday's singles match with a 40-foot birdie putt on the par-4 10th to take a lead and the eventual 3-and-1 victory.
Castano and Canizares were integral players in leading the European Team to its first win in America 14-10 thanks to a change in philosophy. This is the second year players outside of Great Britain and Ireland have been allowed to compete with the team
Canizares relished the opportunity saying that, 'Representing your country is the greatest thing an athlete can do in sports.'
He is coming off a freshmen season in which he won the NCAA Championship, was named the Pride/Softspikes Freshman of the Year and was named to both the PING All-America Team and the Softspikes All-Freshmen Team. He also led the Sun Devils with three top-five finishes and a 71.65 stroke average.
ASU Men's Golf finished sixth at the NCAA Championships last season.
