July 18, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's golfer Ricky Barnes shot a three-over-par 74 in Friday's second round of the 132nd British Open at Royal St. George's Golf Course in Sandwich, England.
Barnes, the top-finishing amateur among three in the field of 153, posted a 36-38=74 (+3) total on Friday, five strokes les than his opening round tally, to finish in a tie for 97th place. His two-round score of 153 (+11) is three strokes shy of the projected second-round cut with six players still needing to complete the round. Barnes' tally is 12 stokes off the pace set by Davis Love III, who is the only player in the field below par. Love carded a 141 (-1) total and leads the field by two strokes.
Barnes' second 18 holes was markedly better than his first, as he totaled one birdie and 15 pars. He hit six of 14 fairways (four more than Thurday), had six fewer putts on the round, including four more one-putt greens. At one point of the round (Nos. 3-13), Barnes collected a birdie and 10 consecutive pars.
His only slip came on No. 14, a 550-yard, par-5, in which he posted a triple-bogey eight. Barnes quickly rebounded to finish the round with four straight pars. Royal St. George's is a par-71, 7,106-yard layout.
His appearance at the 132nd British Open is Barnes' fifth professional tour appearance this season. The reigning U.S. Amateur champion also competed in the Chrysler Classic of Tucson (T18th), The Masters (21st), the U.S. Open (T59th), and the Barclays Scottish Open (MC).
