Joyce Wins Canadian National Hammer Championship

VICTORIA, British Columbia - University of California former star hammer thrower Jennifer Joyce won that event at the Canada Dry National Track and Field Championships Friday, July 18 in Victoria, British Columbia. Joyce, who completed her first year on Cal's staff as a volunteer assistant throws coach last season, tossed the hammer 207-11.

Canada's national championships served as the trials for the 2003 IAAF World Championships in Paris, France, 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and 2003 World Student Games in Daegu, Korea. Others that will represent Cal at the world championships include multi-event coach Ed Miller and former athletes Grace Upshaw and Kristin Heaston.

Joyce, a two-time All-American, owns the Cal school hammer record (214-0). During her career as a Golden Bear she won one Pac-10 hammer championship title and was an NCAA qualifier in the event all four years. Her highest finish at the NCAA Track and Field Championships came as a sophomore when she took fourth-place.
