WSU Football Camp Opens Aug. 5

July 22, 2003

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Bill Doba's first fall football camp as Washington State University's head football coach officially gets underway Aug. 5, when the Cougar veterans and new players alike converge on the Pullman campus.

Doba and his staff have less than a month, 25 days to be exact, to prepare the team for WSU's opener against Idaho Aug. 30 in Seattle. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Seahawk Stadium.

Recent rule changes by the NCAA have altered the look of early football practices. Beginning this year, all players begin practice the same day, with single practices mandated for the first five days. In recent years, new players, including freshmen and transfers, arrived in advance of the returning veterans. Newcomers previously had three days of orientation and limited practice time before drills officially began with the entire squad.

All WSU players will hit the field for the first time August 6 for a 9:30 a.m. practice. Cougar practices for the first five days will be held in the morning, with helmets allowed for the first two days, helmets and shoulder pads for days' three and four and full contact during the fifth practice. New Cougar players will undergo campus orientation the first three days during the afternoon.

Tentatively, the WSU team will hold its first scrimmage Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Martin Stadium. The second scrimmage is set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, and a third scrimmage is planned for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20. In addition, the team will hold a modified scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 23 as a dress rehearsal for the Idaho opener.

In the past the Cougars staged an official media/photo day the day before the first practice. This year the team will gather for team and group photos following the Aug. 23 practice.

New NCAA rules allow double-day practices will begin Monday, Aug. 11, according to Doba. While the new rule allows for twice-a-day practices, they may not occur on consecutive days. As in recent years, the Cougars do not plan to have more than one contact practice each day. When two practices are held the same day, one will be full contact and the other a non-contact session.

NOTE: WSU head football coach Bill Doba and senior quarterback and co-captain Matt Kegel will attend Pacific-10 Conference Football Media Day activities Wednesday, July 30, in Los Angeles.
