USA Women Win Third Straight At Grand Prix With Sweep Of Netherlands

Gioia Del Colle, Italy - Logan Tom scored a match-high-tying 15 points to lead three players in double figures as the U.S. women's national volleyball team swept the Netherlands to improve to 3-0 at the 2003 FIVB World Grand Prix Wednesday afternoon at the Palazzo dello Sport.
Tom (Salt Lake City, Utah) had 11 kills, two service aces, two blocks and a hitting percentage of .500 in the 25-23, 25-20, 25-15 victory in Pool A.
The United States, one of just two remaining unbeaten teams in the field (China is also 3-0), will now enjoy a day off from competition on Thursday along with the rest of the tournament teams. Pool play resumes on Friday, with Team USA taking on Germany.
'This was a very important match and a great win,' said libero Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas), who had eight digs. 'We played together and executed USA volleyball. Now our focus is on Germany.'
Danielle Scott (Baton Rouge, La.) scored 13 points on 10 kills and a match-high three blocks, while Nancy Metcalf (Hull, Iowa) added 12 points on 11 kills and one block as Team USA posted its eighth-straight win to improve its season record to 12-6.
As a team, the United States out-blocked the Netherlands, 11-5, and posted a hitting percentage of .471.
'We played a great match, but the fun has only just begun,' said outside hitter Keba Phipps (Las Vegas, Nev.), who scored eight points on seven kills and one block.
Elles Leferink led the Netherlands with 15 points on 15 kills, while Irina Donets added 10 points on seven kills, two blocks and one ace. The Netherlands was coming off a thrilling five-set win over defending world champion Italy on Tuesday night.
In other Pool A action Wednesday, Germany handed Japan its third-straight loss, 3-1, while Cuba earned its first win and dealt defending world champion Italy its second-straight five-set loss. In Pool B, China routed Thailand, 3-0, Korea downed Canada, 3-1 and defending Grand Prix champion Russia edged Brazil, 3-2.
