Body Of Incoming Freshman Linebacker Drean Rucker Found

July 26, 2003

The body of incoming USC freshman linebacker Drean Rucker, missing since Monday evening (July 21) after he drowned in the ocean off of Huntington Beach (Calif.), was found by lifeguards on Saturday morning (July 26).

The 18-year-old Rucker, a 2002 prep All-American as a senior at Canyon Springs High in Moreno Valley (Calif.), was discovered near the Huntington Pier, not far from where he was last seen struggling in the water.

'This is an extraordinary tragedy for Drean's family and for the Trojan Family,' said USC head coach Pete Carroll. 'Drean was a wonderful young man with a great spirit. He would light up a room with his smile. He was a highly-competitive and talented football player who was going to make an impact at USC on and off the field. It's just a terrible loss. The hearts and prayers of the Trojan Family go out to his family.'

Rucker was expected to report to USC on Aug. 5 with the rest of the Trojan football team for the start of 2003 fall practice.

He is survived by his father, Andre Rucker, his mother, Adrienne Stocker, and a younger brother, Taurean.

Funeral services are pending.
