Track & Field Adds Eric Boxley to Coaching Staff
Aug. 1, 2003
Eric Boxley will join the University of Arizona track and field coaching staff announced Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Fred Harvey on Friday. Boxley served as the team's sport psychologist and volunteer assistant coach during the 2003 season. He also served as a mentor to student-athletes for the athletic department's academic services department, or C.A.T.S. program. He will coach the pole vaulters and jumpers entering the 2004 season.
Boxley graduated cum laude from Wichita State University in 1998 with a degree in psychology. As a collegiate athlete, Boxley was an individual qualifier in the pole vault in 1997 and 1998 at Wichita State. He earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors following the 1997 season. In 1998, he was the MVC champion and garnered MVC Athlete of the Year honors as well as setting a new indoor conference meet record. He was also ranked as high as fifth in Division I. He also competed three seasons previous at Arkansas State, where he won multiple All-Sun Belt Conference honors and a conference title while helping Arkansas State to a conference team championship.
After college, Boxley continued to train under former Wildcat pole vault/jumps coach Tom Hays in Tucson from 1998-2000. Boxley competed internationally and represented Microsoft during those years.
Boxley has spent the previous two years before coming to Arizona at the University of Missouri. In 2002, he earned his masters degree in Educational and Counseling Psychology, specializing in Sport Psychology. While at Missouri, Boxley was a volunteer assistant coach who coached the pole-vaulters as well as the decathletes in the vault. Boxley led a young group of vaulters to high levels of achievement in a major conference setting. Under his direction, athletes gained seven All-Big 12 honors, one Big 12 Conference champion (decathlon). Two individuals achieved national qualifying standards, Jennifer Bennett (pole vault) and Knut Summerfeldt (decathlon). Boxley also mentored student-athletes as an academic services associate for the athletic department's Total Person Program.
