Aug. 1, 2003

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - The USA Basketball Women's Pan American Games Team opens competition tomorrow morning (Saturday) at 9:00 a.m. (EDT) against a Cuban squad they have faced four times in the past 11 days.

The team members opted to vote three players as team captains. They are Jenni Benningfield (Vanderbilt / Louisville, Ky.) , Jamie Carey (Texas / Thornton, Colo.) and Nicole Powell (Stanford / Phoenix, Ariz).

'We all three were very honored to be chosen this year,' said Powell, who is participating her in third USA Basketball event. 'When we were in Cuba the team picked us on base on leadership on and off the floor. I feel very honored considering there are so many prominent college athletes on our team. Jenni, Jamie, and I all three work together daily and our main goal is to guide our team to a gold medal.'

Barbara Turner (Connecticut/Cleveland, Ohio), the youngest member of the team, said there was no question who should be chosen.

'Between the three of them, they are all phenomenal players and people. On the floor they encourage us and want to see us succeed. During our off time, they are the people that always makes sure we are doing okay and they are there for us to talk to. I think we made a good choice this year in captains.'

Powell is the most experienced USA Pan Am player with two previousexperiences under her belt. In 2001 she earned a bronze at the USA Junior World Championship and she took home a gold as a member of the 2000 USA Basketball Women's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team that finished 5-0.
