Rain Forces Suspension of Play at 103rd U.S. Women's Amateur

Aug. 5, 2003

For the second straight day, inclement weather forced the suspension of play at the 103rd U.S. Women's Amateur being hosted this week at the 6,368-yard, par 71 Philadelphia Country Club.

Play was halted for the day at 4:35 p.m. EDT because of heavy rain. Play will resume at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. Only 60 players had begun the second round.

UCLA players Charlotte Mayorkas and Bridget Dwyer managed to complete the first round and both put themselves into solid position to make the 36-hole cut. In the first round, Mayorkas posted a two-over par 73 and Dwyer carded a four-over par 75. Halfway through her second round on Tuesday, Mayorkas was one-over par. Match play commences after two rounds following a 36-hole cut.

A foursome of Californians is at the top of the leaderboard after the first round. Irene Cho of La Habra, Sarah Huarte of Shingle Springs and Jane Park are tied for first place at two-under par 69, and Erica Blasberg of Corona is tied for second at one-under 70.
