Arizona Football Enters Second Day of Fall Camp

Aug. 7, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona football team kicked off 2003 training camp Wednesday afternoon with a two-hour workout at the UA's Rincon Vista activity fields south of campus. Head coach John Mackovic and the Wildcat coaching staff put the players through two timed 300-yard shuttle runs to start practice, and then focused on fundamentals and position drills for the majority of the first session. Arizona punctuated Wednesday's drills with more sprints.

'We have a long way to go, but everybody has a long way to go,' Mackovic said. 'We did a lot today, and we had our run test at the beginning of practice. Our big guys aren't ready to play on either side. We need to take advantage of the fact that we play in a warm-weather climate. We need to be better conditioned than we were last year.'

The team won't don full pads until Sunday, but the Wildcats worked in several full line and seven on seven passing and rushing sessions with evident enthusiasm. No tackling was allowed in the full-line work.

'We are all optimistic. We know how close we have been to achieving a lot of good things. We have a fresh start, and we feel good about what we're doing. Our schedule is very demanding, so we can't be less than 100 percent ready to go,' Mackovic said.

To open camp, the Wildcat quarterbacks performed decently in skeleton passing action against the linebackers and defensive backs. Sophomore Nic Costa and redshirt freshman Ryan O'Hara each completed 5-of-8 passes. Newcomer Kris Heavner completed 3-of-3 passes, while fellow freshman Richard Kovalcheck threw two interceptions in three attempts.

'The quarterback race is really going to be fun to watch throughout camp,' Mackovic added. 'Both (Richard) Kovalcheck and (Kris) Heavner have great arms, so they are going to be fun to watch.'

The Wildcats will practice the first two days in shorts and helmets, then add shoulder pads for the third and fourth practice days. On Sunday, August 10, the team is permitted its first practice in full pads, which will be held on the campus practice facility. After Sunday's first practice in pads, UA will commence two-a-days, though such double sessions are limited to five days throughout camp, which ends on August 22.

The Wildcats return to the Rincon Vista field on Thursday, August 7, at 6:55 p.m.

Other practice notes...

... Coaches and medical staff have erected a large tent on both the UA practice field and the Rincon Vista facility to help players stay cool and hydrate periodically in the shade in the 100 degree Tucson weather...

... Starting center Keoki Fraser was cleared to practice Wednesday after meeting some academic responsibilities. 'Keoki is back, and we still have some other players working on academic stuff', Mackovic said...

... Mackovic also announced that senior wide receiver Juan Valentine will not be returning to the team, and he explained that redshirt freshman defensive end Tim Volk was not cleared by UA doctors to play this season...

... Junior kicker Ryan Slack has decided to transfer, according to Mackovic, because he will receive a full scholarship at another academic institution.
