Arizona Football Training Camp Notes - Day 4

Aug. 9, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona football team returned to the Rincon Vista practice facility Saturday evening for its fourth practice and continued its pre-season training with a spirited session. Head coach John Mackovic and the Wildcats continued to focus on fundamentals and position drills, with a greater focus on several full-line and seven-on-seven passing and rushing sessions.

'We did a lot of good work today, but we have to work together as a team in order to improve,' Mackovic emphasized in his comments to the team immediately following practice.

The Wildcats are now ready for their first practice in full pads, as they are set to hold their fifth session on Sunday, August 10, at 4:30 p.m., in the UA practice facility on campus.

In Saturday's seven-on-seven passing drills against the linebackers and defensive backs, the quarterbacks performed better, as they combined to complete 15-of-19 passes for 155 yards. Sophomore Nic Costa completed 5-of-5 passes for 30 yards, while redshirt freshman Ryan O'Hara completed 6-of-7 passes for 80 yards. Freshman Kris Heavner completed 2-of-4 passes for 30 yards, and fellow freshman Richard Kovalcheck finished 2-of-3 for 15 yards. On the defensive side, redshirt freshman cornerback Gary Shepard broke up a Ryan O'Hara pass during the skeleton drills.

'The quarterbacks performed much better tonight, and they threw more balls right to the receivers,' Mackovic said. 'I was very pleased that they were able to improve.'

In the full-team session during the last 15 minutes of practice, the quarterbacks did not fare as well, as they combined to complete 4-of-11 passes for 40 yards. Costa hit junior tight end Steve Fleming for a short 5-yard pass. O'Hara completed 3-of-5 passes for 35 yards, including a 20-yard pass to junior wide receiver Ricky Williams. On the defensive side, sophomore cornerback Jason Martin broke up a Costa pass in the first series.

After Sunday's first practice in full pads, UA will commence two-a-days, though such double sessions are limited to five days throughout camp, which ends on August 22. On Monday, August 11, the Wildcats will hold practice at 6:20 a.m. and 7:05 p.m., with both sessions at the Rincon Vista facility.

Other training camp notes...... Following practice, Mackovic announced that sophomore offensive tackle Tanner Bell left practice after injuring his left knee and will be evaluated. Bell, a 6-foot-8, 314-pound offensive lineman from Castroville, Calif., played in six games for the Wildcats last season... Freshman offensive guard Ismael Garcia reported to camp Saturday after completing an extra science requirement, according to Mackovic, and will not practice in full pads until his fifth day of training camp... Junior linebacker Andre Torrey cut his foot and was held out of action Saturday night after receiving stitches... Sophomore running back Gainus Scott was held out of practice Saturday, as well. 'Gainus is not feeling very well, so we are trying to be very cautious with him,' Mackovic said.
